Off-Page SEO: Build Authority, Backlinks, and AI Citations

A research-backed system for earning authoritative backlinks, media mentions, and citations through original assets, targeted outreach, and digital PR.

Independent research, media, community, and podcast sources connected around one authority

Off-page SEO is the work of earning independent evidence that a person, page, or brand is useful and credible. Backlinks matter, but so do unlinked mentions, expert quotations, reviews, media coverage, association listings, podcast appearances, and citations in research or AI answers.

The short answer: build one genuinely useful asset, map the publishers whose audiences need it, and offer each of them a specific contribution. Authority grows when third parties choose to reference you—not when you manufacture link volume.

This is the off-page companion to our on-page SEO, GEO, and AEO guide. The first guide makes a page discoverable, understandable, and citation-ready. This one explains how to earn the external corroboration that a page cannot create for itself.

What does off-page SEO mean in an AI-search world?

It means building independent, discoverable corroboration around an entity and its claims. A traditional backlink is one form of corroboration; a named expert quote, product review, dataset citation, and consistent brand mention can also help people and systems resolve who you are and why your work matters.

Do not collapse these outcomes into one metric:

OutcomeWhat happenedWhat it can create
BacklinkAnother page linked to your URLDiscovery, referral traffic, context, and potential ranking signals
MentionA credible source named the brand or expert without a linkAwareness and entity corroboration
Editorial citationA publisher attributed a claim, datum, or quote to youTrust, referral demand, and a reusable source trail
AI citationA generated answer visibly referenced your pageAnswer visibility and possible referral traffic

Bing’s guidelines say relevant external links can support discovery and authority. Google does not publish a simple link-value formula, and third-party “domain authority” scores are not Google metrics. Use them for rough prospecting, never as a substitute for editorial relevance and audience quality.

The relationship between earned coverage and AI citations is plausible but not deterministic. The foundational GEO experiment found that citations, quotations, and statistics could improve source visibility after retrieval in its test setting. A newer critical survey warns that evidence across platforms remains narrow and unstable. No backlink package can guarantee inclusion in a generated answer.

A worthwhile backlink is editorially chosen, topically relevant, useful to a real audience, and placed on a page that can be discovered. A link from a modest specialist publication can be more valuable than an unrelated link from a high-scoring domain.

Score a possible placement on six questions:

  1. Relevance: Does this page serve the same problem, audience, or field?
  2. Editorial choice: Did an editor independently decide the reference belongs there?
  3. Context: Does surrounding copy explain why the source is useful?
  4. Audience: Could the placement send qualified readers even if rankings did not change?
  5. Retrievability: Is the page public, canonical, crawlable, and likely to remain available?
  6. Integrity: Is the relationship disclosed and the link attribute appropriate?

A nofollow link is not automatically worthless. It can produce traffic, expertise signals to readers, branded search, future coverage, and citations. If money, a product, or another commercial arrangement influenced placement, Google says to qualify the link with rel="sponsored"; nofollow remains acceptable. User-created links should normally use rel="ugc" or nofollow.

The best linkable asset gives a publisher something costly to create alone: evidence, access, utility, or interpretation. “A longer blog post” is not a defensible asset unless its length contains unique value.

Original data and repeatable research

Publish a narrow benchmark, survey, dataset, experiment, or market analysis with:

  • a precise question and dated methodology
  • sample size, limitations, and definitions
  • a downloadable or inspectable evidence trail where possible
  • charts with underlying numbers and descriptive captions
  • a short summary that a journalist can accurately cite

Release updates on a predictable cadence. A small, credible quarterly benchmark often earns more durable references than one broad “state of the industry” report.

Tools, templates, and reference material

Calculators, checklists, glossaries, comparison matrices, open-source utilities, and reusable templates earn links when they remove work. Make the page itself useful before asking for registration, explain inputs and limitations, and maintain it after publication.

Expert access and quotable interpretation

A real expert can translate a complex development, challenge a popular assumption, or provide a rapid, attributable response. Support the expert with a durable profile, relevant credentials, disclosed conflicts, and examples of prior work. A generic executive quote written for promotion is rarely useful.

Primary-source explainers

When a standard, regulation, paper, or platform change is difficult to interpret, publish a source-linked explanation with exact scope, examples, and caveats. The value is not rewriting the announcement; it is making consequences clear for a specific audience.

Before outreach, apply this test: what can the recipient now publish, verify, or decide that they could not do from the existing top results? If the answer is unclear, improve the asset first.

Go where the audience already looks for evidence. Choose a small number of relevant ecosystems instead of submitting to every directory or marketplace.

For reactive media opportunities, current services include Qwoted, which connects journalists with expert sources, and the UK-focused ResponseSource Journalist Enquiry Service. Treat platforms as lead sources, not vending machines: answer only requests that precisely match the expert’s knowledge, respect the deadline and requested format, and never make coverage or a followed link a condition.

You can also build a direct list of:

  • journalists who repeatedly cover the exact beat
  • newsletter editors with recurring data or expert sections
  • podcast hosts who interview practitioners, not only sponsors
  • maintainers of relevant open-source documentation
  • conference programmers and professional associations
  • authors of pages that already cite comparable evidence

Do not pitch health, legal, finance, or other high-stakes commentary outside verified qualifications.

How do you find the right prospects without creating spam?

Start from a specific page-level fit, not a purchased list of domains. The question is “who needs this evidence?” rather than “who has a high score?”

Use four prospecting paths:

  1. Citation gaps: Find current articles that make a claim your primary data can support or correct.
  2. Resource gaps: Find curated pages whose audience needs your tool but that do not yet cover the function.
  3. Coverage patterns: Track who cited comparable reports, experts, or tools in the last year.
  4. Unlinked mentions: Find accurate existing mentions where a link to the primary source would genuinely help readers verify the claim.

Bing’s Backlinks report shows referring pages, domains, and anchor text, can compare a site with up to two others, and includes a “domains not linking to my site” view. Google Search Console’s Links report provides another first-party sample, but Google explicitly says it is not comprehensive.

Build a research sheet with the exact source page, author, audience, recent relevant work, the gap you can fill, evidence offered, contact route, status, and outcome. Delete a prospect if you cannot write a truthful one-sentence reason the contribution helps that page’s readers.

How do you write outreach people will answer?

Lead with the recipient’s current work and a usable contribution. A strong pitch is short enough to scan, specific enough to prove it is not automated, and complete enough to evaluate without a meeting.

A research or resource pitch

Subject: Data for your analysis of [specific topic]

Hi [name] — your [article/newsletter] distinguishes [specific observation]. We just measured [precise question] across [sample and period]. The result most relevant to your readers is [one result], with the methodology and limitations here: [URL]. If you update the piece, you are welcome to use the chart or data with attribution. I can also send the underlying table.

A journalist-source response

Hi [name] — I can address [exact request] from my work in [relevant qualification]. Short answer: [two or three quotable sentences with a concrete example or number]. Source or methodology: [URL]. Attribution: [name, accurate title, organization]. I am available before [deadline] if you need a follow-up.

An unlinked-source note

Hi [name] — thank you for referencing [research/brand] in [article]. The primary source with the methodology and current figures is [URL]. Adding it may help readers verify the claim. One small accuracy note: [only if needed].

Do not mention “dofollow,” keyword-rich anchor text, or domain metrics. Do not attach large files without permission. Follow up once with new information—not “just circling back”—then stop. Relationship-building means continuing to be a useful source after the first placement, not repeatedly asking for favors.

What did Reddit practitioners add to the research?

Reddit supplied useful practitioner experience, but not controlled evidence. Across the threads reviewed, the recurring advice was to target a narrow audience, offer a unique viewpoint, respond to journalists quickly with ready-to-use material, and expect low or inconsistent hit rates.

In a 2026 r/SEO discussion, practitioners reported that zero-budget links remain possible but require distinctive pitches, patience, and consistent effort. Another r/SEO thread on backlink acquisition emphasized audience fit, networking, and highly targeted outreach because quality publishers are flooded with generic email.

The strongest warning came from a journalist-pitch discussion: reporters can identify sources who care only about the link, while useful responses reduce the reporter’s research and editing burden. Experiences varied from meaningful coverage to many hours without a placement. That variance is exactly why outreach should be measured as a portfolio, not sold internally as a guaranteed link count.

Reddit itself is not a place to manufacture corroboration. Its current rules require authentic participation and prohibit spam and content manipulation. The Reddit Pro organic playbook recommends learning community norms, communicating like a person, commenting more often than posting, and seeking moderator approval before promotional posts.

Practical rule: answer the question fully on Reddit. Disclose your affiliation. Add a link only when the community permits it and the destination supplies evidence or utility that does not fit cleanly in the comment. Never use employees, agencies, or fake accounts to simulate independent recommendations.

How do you earn citations in AI answers?

Make the evidence easy to retrieve, attribute, and corroborate, then earn independent discussion around it. AI citation outreach is not a separate channel; it is the combined effect of strong on-page source design and legitimate off-page authority.

Use this sequence:

  1. Publish the canonical claim with a named author, date, method, limitations, and primary evidence.
  2. Give each important statistic a stable context and clear definition.
  3. Earn coverage from relevant third parties that identify the source accurately.
  4. Keep names, titles, organization details, and key facts consistent across your site and genuine external profiles.
  5. Update materially changed evidence and redirect retired URLs to the closest successor.
  6. Measure whether the original page is discovered, cited, and visited rather than counting mentions alone.

Google’s AI-search guidance does not prescribe special “GEO backlinks,” special schema, or an llms.txt file. It recommends the same crawlability, originality, page experience, and structured-data accuracy required for search generally.

Avoid any tactic whose economics depend on the publisher abandoning editorial choice. Google’s spam policies explicitly identify buying or selling ranking links, excessive exchanges, automated link creation, low-quality directories, optimized forum-comment links, required links, and large-scale advertorial or guest-post links as link spam.

Red flags include:

  • a guaranteed number of high-authority “dofollow” links
  • a price list based only on third-party domain metrics
  • placements across unrelated sites with no audience explanation
  • exact-match anchor requirements
  • republished articles that exist only to host a link
  • private networks or expired domains controlled by the seller
  • bulk forum profiles, comments, widgets, or footer links
  • reciprocal-link pages created primarily for exchange
  • undisclosed payment, gifts, or affiliate relationships
  • fake reviews, synthetic Reddit discussions, or vote manipulation

Guest contributions are legitimate when they serve the host publication’s readers and the editor controls the result. They become risky when scaled primarily to manufacture keyword-rich links. If a commercial arrangement exists, disclose it and qualify links appropriately.

How should authority and outreach be measured?

Measure quality and business effect at four levels. A raw backlink count cannot tell you whether the campaign reached the right people.

LevelMetricsWhat to inspect
ExecutionQualified prospects, replies, accepted contributions, time per placementIs targeting improving?
PlacementNew relevant referring pages and domains, mentions, citation accuracy, link attributesWas the reference editorial and durable?
AudienceReferral visits, engaged sessions, subscriptions, branded search, direct enquiriesDid the right people notice?
Search and AIIndexed referring pages, linked-page performance, Bing citation share, cited pages and grounding queriesDid external evidence coincide with discoverability or citation?

Use annotations and comparison periods. A placement preceding a traffic change is not proof that it caused the change. In Bing Webmaster Tools, the AI Performance report can show cited pages, grounding queries, topics, intents, and citation share. Search Console can show organic search performance, while server analytics can separate referrals and conversions.

Audit placements quarterly. Fix incorrect attribution, update broken destination URLs, reclaim valuable broken links with redirects, and stop investing in channels that produce neither audience value nor credible corroboration.

What does a practical 90-day authority plan look like?

Focus the first 90 days on one evidence asset and one expert identity. This creates a coherent signal and enough repetitions to learn without spraying weak pitches across the web.

Days 1–30: create the source

  • Choose one question your audience and relevant publishers repeatedly need answered.
  • Review current coverage and record the evidence gap.
  • Produce the dataset, benchmark, tool, or expert reference page.
  • Add method, limitations, author credentials, citations, downloadable evidence, and update policy.
  • Build a list of 30–50 page-level prospects across three channels.

Days 31–60: contribute selectively

  • Send five to ten deeply researched pitches per week.
  • Monitor two relevant journalist-source networks or direct beat lists.
  • Offer one expert briefing, visual, or underlying table without requiring a link.
  • Participate in one or two relevant communities under their rules.
  • Record replies, objections, coverage, attribution, and time spent.

Days 61–90: learn and compound

  • Publish a follow-up based on questions from journalists and readers.
  • Turn accepted interviews into an accessible transcript or source page where permitted.
  • Ask accurate unlinked mentions to add the primary source only when it helps verification.
  • Compare channels by relevant placements, referral quality, and business outcomes.
  • Improve the asset and prospect criteria before expanding volume.

The goal is not “50 links in 90 days.” The goal is a repeatable system in which credible people cite work that deserves to remain cited.

Frequently asked questions

What is the safest way to build backlinks?
Create something a relevant publisher genuinely needs, identify the specific person and page it helps, and send a concise personalized pitch. The publisher must retain editorial choice. Avoid payments, required links, automated placement, and exchanges intended to manipulate rankings.
Do nofollow links have any value?
A nofollow link can still create qualified referral traffic, awareness, expert credibility, and later citations. Google treats nofollow as a relationship signal rather than a promise to pass ranking credit, so evaluate the placement by its audience and outcome—not only its attribute.
How can a brand earn citations in AI answers?
Publish unique, verifiable evidence on crawlable pages and earn independent coverage where the relevant audience already researches the topic. Clear entities, primary data, expert attribution, and precise sources can make a page easier to use, but no outreach tactic can guarantee an AI citation.
Should a company promote its articles on Reddit?
Only when a community permits it and the contribution is useful without the click. Read each community's rules, participate as a person, disclose affiliation, answer questions fully, and link sparingly. Never seed fake conversations, manipulate votes, or mass-post the same URL.
